Curriculum delivery through the Middle Phase of learning at Unity College aims to provide opportunity for learning through collaboration, problem solving, critical thinking and fun! We aim to ensure that the transition from primary learning environments to secondary learning environments is strategically supported by ensuring that Year 7 students have fewer teachers via our 'core teacher' model, and daily learning experiences that authentically engage their needs and interests. It is a teaching approach that succeeds in developing students who are valued, challenged and supported by a dedicated team of middle school teaching professionals.
The Middle Phase curriculum scope aligns with the nine key learning areas directed by Brisbane Catholic Education and the Australian Curriculum. These are:
- Religious Education
- English
- Mathematics
- Science
- Humanities and Social Sciences (History, Geography, Civics & Citizenship and Economics & Business)
- Health and Physical Education
- The Arts (Drama, Dance, Music and Visual Art)
- Technologies (Food Technology, Design Technology and Information & Communication Technology)
- Languages (Japanese)
Teaching of this curriculum integrates the principles of Middle School teaching and learning design by ensuring that the delivery is:
- Challenging
- Learner-centred
- Collaboratively organised and delivered
- Ethically aware
- Community orientated
- Adequately resourced
Pastoral guidance, identity and formation is an integrated focus for relationship building at Unity College. Students in our Middle Phase retain the same Year Level Leader and, when possible, the same Pastoral Care teacher, over their two-year journey in Year 7 and 8. This consistency enables deeper and more authentic relationship building between our pastoral care team, the students, and their families.
The use of technology for learning is also vitally important for the holistic development of the millennial adolescent. Middle phase students at Unity College utilise the Apple iPad device platform, together with a range of College provided software to build 21st century skills across the curriculum. Our Middle Years Technology Centre has been designed as a hub for the immersion of students in practical experiences across Science, Visual Art, Food Technology and Industrial Technology; ensuring that students can actively participate in learning using specialised equipment in safe, purpose-built facilities.
